Chapter 6: Working Alone
Noorâs new role was more than just that of a radio operator. She had to take on the bulk of the work that the Prosper circuit had been doing. Noor now regularly met with three other agents who had managed to avoid capture. The SOE sent over some more people, Nicholas Bodington, and the radio operator who had left as Noor arrived. They were in contact with who they thought was Norman, and they told them to meet at a safe house. The radio operator agreed to go and check it out, even though they were sure that it was a trap. Normanâs transmissions had aroused suspicion due to slight differences in the Morse style that he used. This was something that the SOE would be guilty of a number of times â being aware that agents had been captured but still continuing to interact with them over radio.
The operator was arrested as soon as he entered the safe house. His war, and life, were both over at this point. Even though he was subjected to harsh interrogation and incredibly brutal torture, he never gave the Nazis any information. He was eventually shot by firing squad. This meant that Bodington had to rely on Noor to carry out all of his transmissions, which put her in even greater danger than before.
What Noor didnât realize was putting her in danger was the work she was carrying out for Dericourt. This was in addition to the work she carried out with the three agents she regularly met up with. Noor arranged for the three agents to meet with Bodington, and he facilitated a flat for Noor to rent. This meant that she had somewhere to stay all of the time now, rather than floating between a number of different friends. While it may seem slightly more dangerous being in one place all of the time, it actually kept her safer because it meant that she wasnât arousing suspicion by staying at several different houses.
Things only got worse for the circuits, too. Noor was the only operator in the Paris area, but another spate of arrests meant that the operators in the surrounding area were also taken out. It left Noor as the only operator in Paris and the outskirts of Paris. It meant that Noor had to start transmitting even though she had been given the order to lie low. The absolute lack of any other ways to get in touch with London meant that Noor was their only form of contact.
Antelme had managed to make it back to London, and he was in touch with Noor over the radio. He told her that he wanted her to discover how the Germans were funding their troops during the invasion of France. While he already knew that a lot of it came from plundering the country, he wanted more specifics rather than a general gist of what was going on. Noor had to find out as much as she could without arousing suspicion.
